The doctor will place the ball of the upper arm bone back into the joint socket and is called closed reduction. Severe pain stops almost immediately once the shoulder joint is back in place.

Physical therapy

The arm should be immobilized in a sling and swathed for 1 to 3 weeks. While the patient is in the sling, elbow, wrist and hand range motion should be encouraged. After the patient comes out of the sling, encourage the patient to get about 10 degree of improvement in their motion per week.

Surgical Treatment

The goal of the surgery procedure is to reattach the torn tissue back to the place where it tore off the bone. The most likely spot where the ligament tears is the glenoid. Recurrent shoulder dislocations also stretch out the ligaments. It is imperative to also address the tissue laxity during the operative procedure.
